What's News

  • Airbnb launched AI search letting users find properties via text or voice prompts, with dynamic filters like cribs and playgrounds for a 'baby' query
  • CEO Brian Chesky said $100 billion flows through the platform, making conversion-safe AI search the hard part
  • Fall update expands services including meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, ski and boat rental, plus social trip maps with a privacy opt-out

Airbnb is putting live an AI-powered search that lets users find properties through text or voice prompts — its first serious move into generative AI after CEO Brian Chesky spent months teasing a cautious, deliberately non-chatbot approach.

The feature anchors Airbnb's fall product update, announced Tuesday, and arrives alongside an expansion of on-the-ground services and new social features designed to push users toward more trips and more bookings.

How the AI search works

Users can flip a toggle to search for properties by typing or speaking a prompt. Once the query runs, the interface generates dynamic filters tuned to the request. Type "baby," and Airbnb surfaces follow-on filters for cribs, playgrounds, and children's books and toys.

The platform is also applying AI to pull out relevant attributes of a property, and it will let travelers compare wishlist properties through AI-generated summaries and reviews.

Chesky has been explicit about why the rollout took time. The company refused to ship a chatbot-style interface, and the engineering bar is higher than a typical search project because of what flows through the platform.

"We are finally making our first foray into AI search. And what you see is just the very beginning of something. And over the coming months, we're going to really be iterating this very quickly. It's not hard to create AI search; it's hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform," Chesky told TechCrunch.

He added: "Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn't kill conversion rate, that's the hard part."

Services expansion

Offline, Airbnb is pushing further into territory hotels already own. The fall update expands services the company launched last year — meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, and ski and boat rental in limited locations — and broadens grocery delivery.

The two-track strategy is straightforward: on the ground, Airbnb wants to compete with hotels by bundling a wide set of services into the stay; online, it is using AI and its network of hosts and guests to aid travel discovery.

Social features

The update also doubles down on social mechanics designed to nudge users into taking more trips and booking additional experiences such as food tastings and craft workshops. Last year, Airbnb began letting users connect with friends and fellow travelers inside the app.

Now travelers can open a map built from their connections' past or upcoming trips. Tap on a trip and you can see where that connection stayed and which experiences they booked. Airbnb built in a privacy escape hatch: users can opt out of sharing their own trips.

The company is also constructing neighborhood pages, assembled from guest reviews and other sources, to help travelers find places to eat and things to do.

The stakes

The $100 billion figure Chesky cited is the heart of the bet. Airbnb is layering AI onto a marketplace where any friction added to search risks measurable damage to bookings, which makes conversion-rate protection — not raw AI capability — the binding constraint.

Chesky's promise of rapid iteration over the coming months signals that this week's launch is a foundation, not a finished product. How quickly Airbnb can deepen AI-driven discovery without touching its conversion funnel will determine whether search becomes a genuine growth lever or a feature that stays cosmetic.
