What's News

  • Anthropic revenue rose 45% to $16.8bn (£12.7bn) in the three months to end-September, the BBC understands.
  • Revenue climbed from $4.7bn in Q1 to $11.6bn in Q2 to $16.8bn in Q3 this year.
  • Anthropic briefed prospective investors on Wednesday at its San Francisco headquarters.
  • A blockbuster Anthropic share sale is expected by the end of the year.
  • OpenAI's listing could value it above $1tn, but CEO Sam Altman said in September it will not go public this year.

Anthropic's revenue surged 45% to $16.8bn (£12.7bn) in the three months to the end of September, the BBC understands — a figure the Claude developer revealed while briefing prospective investors on Wednesday at its San Francisco headquarters.

The briefing lays the groundwork for what's expected to be a blockbuster share sale by the end of the year. An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment on the numbers.

How fast is the money coming in?

Very fast, and accelerating. Anthropic's revenue has climbed in successive quarters this year:

  • Q1 (January–March): $4.7bn
  • Q2 (April–June): $11.6bn
  • Q3 (July–September): $16.8bn, up 45% quarter-on-quarter

That's a near-fourfold jump from the first quarter to the third in a single year. Wednesday's investor briefing at headquarters puts hard numbers behind the listing chatter.

Why does this number matter beyond Anthropic?

Anthropic's revenue, along with that of rival OpenAI, works as a gauge for the whole AI industry — a measure of both growth and the sector's ability to finance the infrastructure the technology demands.

The timing is sharp. Some tech stocks, including the chipmakers and hardware firms that power data centres, have come under pressure recently over concerns about how much money is being poured into AI infrastructure. A 45% quarterly jump at one of the industry's two biggest names is the kind of datapoint that either cools or feeds that debate.

The takeaway: Anthropic is growing fast enough to argue the spending boom has revenue behind it.

What about OpenAI's listing?

OpenAI, the ChatGPT developer, is also eyeing a bumper stock market listing — one expected to value the firm at more than $1tn. But don't mark the calendar yet.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said in September that his company will not go public this year as it addresses concerns about the technology's safety.

That leaves Anthropic positioned as the likely first mover among the AI giants to test public-market appetite, with its share sale expected by the end of the year.

If the $16.8bn quarter holds as a trend rather than a peak, Anthropic walks into its listing with the strongest revenue story in AI.
