Anthropic will begin rolling out its read-only Claude Personal Finance beta this week to U.S. subscribers on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans, the company said Thursday.
The new tool connects users’ bank and credit card accounts through Plaid. Anthropic says users can ask Claude about balances, transactions and broader financial questions, while Claude cannot move, manage or invest their money.
Anthropic positions Personal Finance as a financial companion that helps users understand spending and make sense of their own finances. The company says the product offers analysis grounded in connected-account data rather than generic advice.
How does Claude compare with ChatGPT?
OpenAI introduced similar personal finance tools for ChatGPT in May. Those tools also connect financial accounts and let users ask about spending patterns and long-term financial planning.
Anthropic described its release as playing catch-up with ChatGPT. In a blog post, the company wrote: “Claude gives you answers in everyday language, from your balances and transactions, and explains any term that’s new to you.”
Anthropic also used the post to state its commercial approach:
“Like the rest of Claude, Personal Finance has no ads or sponsored recommendations, and it doesn’t offer credit cards, loans, or savings accounts of its own, so your money questions get a straight answer.”
The release matches ChatGPT’s core account-connection feature while keeping Claude’s consumer pitch focused on answers rather than a lineup of its own financial products.
How does Claude answer spending questions?
Under Anthropic’s example, a user can ask at the end of a month: “Where did my money go this month?” Claude then adds spending across connected accounts and sorts it into categories including rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping.
Users can then ask: “Is that more than usual?” or “Anything else I’m missing?” Anthropic says those follow-ups let users move from a category total to a closer review of their spending.
The example shows a two-step flow: Claude calculates the month’s spending, then the user probes the result. Neither step requires Claude to hold payment or investment authority.
What can Personal Finance detect?
Anthropic says Personal Finance analyzes transactions across connected accounts to flag potential issues:
- Duplicate charges.
- Unexpected fees.
- Steadily increasing bills.
Users can also ask whether they are spending more than they earn. Anthropic says Claude can explain concepts such as APR (annual percentage rate) and provide calculations showing how much they have paid in interest over the past year.
The tool can spot patterns and explain costs, but its read-only design stops short of changing bills, balances or investments.
How much account data can Claude see?
Anthropic says access to each connected account is limited to:
- The connected bank’s name.
- The account name and type.
- The last four digits of the account number.
- Balances.
- Credit limits.
- Up to two years of transaction history.
Anthropic also notes that conversations in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. The company acknowledged that some people may have reservations before connecting financial accounts to an AI chatbot.
The stated scope gives Claude enough history to analyze spending while leaving Claude without authority to move money.
Where does the beta fit Anthropic’s expansion?
Personal Finance starts in beta this week for U.S. Pro, Max and Ultra users. Anthropic launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services earlier this year. The consumer tool extends those vertical releases into a recurring use case built around account data and monthly reviews.
For Anthropic, the beta tests whether read-only analysis can deepen Claude’s role in personal finance without turning the chatbot into a transaction channel.
