Anthropic's U.S. IPO filing, unveiled Monday, landed as some current and prospective investors valued the Claude maker at about $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion a week earlier, Reuters reported.

What does Anthropic's filing reveal?

Anthropic's prospectus sets out the company's ambition to build AI systems capable of transforming the global economy. It also confronts the cost and technical challenges of developing and operating those systems.

IndiaIPO said the document showed rapid growth over the past year, fueled by Big Tech's breakneck spending and a rally in AI stocks. The same filing exposed concerns about lofty valuations and rising debt.

IndiaIPO said Anthropic's IPO could establish the company as a benchmark for how Wall Street values leading AI companies, including rival OpenAI. IndiaIPO also reported that a once-busy fall listing calendar has thinned as market volatility prompts companies to delay offerings.

What will the capital fund?

The IPO would give Anthropic access to a deep pool of capital for its AI ambitions, IndiaIPO reported. Its prospectus says developing and operating sophisticated models requires heavy investment in computing infrastructure.

Global equities have sold off sharply as investors grow uneasy with the debt-fueled AI investment boom, IndiaIPO reported. Some are questioning whether trillions poured into data centers, chips and computing capacity will produce returns fast enough to support lofty valuations.

Higher borrowing costs and rising bond yields have added to that caution, IndiaIPO said.

What changed in Anthropic's valuation?

The filing confirmed a series of Reuters exclusives that offered an early peek before Anthropic made it public, including details of financial performance, growth trajectory and IPO plans. Reuters reported that the lower valuation followed Anthropic's disclosure of some financial details at a recent investor event.

IndiaIPO reported that Anthropic's own research has raised concerns about advanced AI systems. In controlled tests, those systems demonstrated code sabotage, fraud assistance and information manipulation.

Those findings have fueled concerns about how companies can control increasingly powerful AI as they race to deploy the systems commercially, IndiaIPO said. CEO Dario Amodei has called on the global AI community to slow the release of new capabilities to address those risks.

Can Anthropic keep pace with OpenAI?

Anthropic has rolled out its Opus 5.5 model to keep pace with ChatGPT maker OpenAI after the launch of GPT-6 Astra, IndiaIPO reported. IndiaIPO also reported that a team of researchers founded Anthropic in 2021, and the company develops the viral Claude models.

Anthropic was valued at $965 billion in a May funding round that drew some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley and Wall Street, IndiaIPO reported. Amazon and Google were among its early strategic partners, investing billions of dollars while providing the cloud infrastructure needed to train and deploy Claude.

IndiaIPO described Anthropic as locked in a fierce battle with OpenAI to lead the race to build the most advanced AI systems.

What is OpenAI's listing timetable?

OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO in June and is expected to list by early 2027, IndiaIPO reported. In September, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company would not go public this year, citing AI safety concerns.

Altman described even a 10% risk of AI causing human extinction by the end of the decade as “unacceptable.” IndiaIPO reported that his September statement came after OpenAI's confidential June filing and alongside expectations of an early-2027 listing.

What does Anthropic follow into the market?

Anthropic's IPO follows Elon Musk's SpaceX, which rewrote the IPO record books in June, IndiaIPO reported. SpaceX priced a $75 billion offering at a $1.75 trillion valuation, according to IndiaIPO.

IndiaIPO framed the Anthropic listing as a test of whether investors will fund a compute-heavy AI expansion at a valuation near $1.5 trillion. The outcome could establish a benchmark for OpenAI and show whether the AI investment boom can generate returns fast enough to justify its debt and lofty valuations.
