En Clau Familiar lands in Reus on November 18, and its subject is the single most decisive moment in any family firm's trajectory: handing the business from one generation to the next. The session, titled "The challenge of generational succession," starts at 12 p.m. at the Círcol de Reus. It's the second stop of an itinerant conversation cycle promoted by ASCEF, EY and The New Barcelona Post.

Two second-generation business leaders anchor the program. Andreu Pintaluba, general director of Andrés Pintaluba, and Santiago Oliva, executive president of Grup Oliva Motor, will share one key experience: both run businesses founded by their parents. Based on their journeys, they will discuss how to assume leadership, adapt the company to new times, and ensure the continuity of the family project.

Attendance is free, but the organizers require prior registration.

Why does succession matter so much?

The transition from one generation to another goes well beyond a change in management, the organizers stress. Succession involves managing expectations, redefining responsibilities, and finding a balance between preserving the inherited legacy and introducing new ways of doing things.

The conversation between Pintaluba and Oliva is built to address these challenges from two different business experiences with a shared starting point: both men assumed the responsibility of continuing and evolving the projects their parents initiated. That framing gives the Reus audience two concrete cases rather than abstract theory — a founder's child who took the reins and had to decide what to keep and what to change.

Who takes the stage in Reus?

The November 18 meeting opens with initial interventions from four named voices:

  • Patrícia Terradellas, president of the host entity, the Círcol de Reus
  • Rosa Tous, corporate vice president of TOUS and president of ASCEF
  • Rosalia Soler, EY partner in Barcelona specializing in auditing
  • Guillem Carol, editor of The New Barcelona Post and general director of Must Media Group

Journalist Jofre Llombart will present and moderate the conversation.

The lineup signals who the cycle is for: family-business owners, their successors, and the professional advisers — auditors, consultants, editors — who work alongside them on continuity questions.

What comes after Reus?

En Clau Familiar is a traveling format. The cycle moves through different parts of Catalonia to share experiences and reflections on the main challenges of family businesses. The first meeting took place in Osona and focused on the relationship between business and territory. Reus is the second stop.

The tour closes in Girona on December 1, with a session dedicated to talent and the role of employees within the family business.

The Reus meeting ends with a snack and networking area, designed to encourage exchange among entrepreneurs, executives and professionals in the area.

One takeaway in plain words: Catalonia's family firms now have a fixed calendar — Reus on November 18, Girona on December 1 — to confront the succession question their founders can't postpone forever.
