Berlin-based Restate closed a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures participating, the company said.
The startup, founded in 2022 by Stephen Ewen, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, builds a durable-execution engine that keeps multi-step software workflows running through crashes and network interruptions. Demand for that capability has intensified as AI agents — autonomous programs performing long, unpredictable sequences of tasks — move into production at companies that cannot tolerate mid-process failures.
"It never was built for agents in the beginning, but it just happened to be a perfect match for all these problems that agents surface," co-founder Ewen said.
Why does durability matter for agents?
Traditional software executes in short, predictable bursts. Agentic workflows run longer and branch in ways developers cannot fully script. Every step must be tracked, replayable and reproducible.
"You need to make sure you track exactly what you do to make it reproducible and have a consistent outcome," Ewen said.
Restate's customers run those workloads in production. Ewen said the company has closed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts over the last few months.
What is Restate building against?
The Series A positions Restate to take on Temporal, the dominant player in durable infrastructure. Temporal, founded in 2019, announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month.
Restate's architectural bet differs from the field. Rather than running its engine atop an external database, the company built its own storage, replication and redundancy layers. That choice, Ewen said, makes the platform "exceptionally fast and lightweight."
Restate argues traditional durability engines serve heavyweight, expensive workflows. Its product targets cheaper, higher-volume workloads.
Who is using it?
Customers already include Replit, the vibe-coding platform, and unnamed Fortune 500 buyers in financial services. The financial firms use Restate alongside AI-native companies, Ewen said.
What is the founders' track record?
Ewen co-created Apache Flink, the open-source stream-processing framework, then served as CTO at Data Artisans. Alibaba acquired Data Artisans in 2019 and rebranded it Ververica, where Ewen stayed on as CTO for three years. Co-founders Shilman and Rohrmann are his former colleagues from those companies.
Where does the money go?
Restate plans to deploy the capital on three priorities:
- Hire a go-to-market team
- Add engineers
- Expand the San Francisco Bay Area office to be closer to current and prospective customers
The Berlin headquarters will remain in place, Ewen said.
What comes next?
Ewen expects the technology to spread well beyond tech companies within two years. "If we fast-forward a couple of years, it's one of those tools, like a database, that I think pretty much any company will have a use case for, no matter their shape and size," he said.
The fresh capital narrows the financial distance to Temporal, the category's established heavyweight. For Berlin's Restate, the next test is whether durable infrastructure for AI agents becomes a two-vendor market or stays Temporal's alone.
