Bill Gross, the entrepreneur behind more than 175 companies, has launched Idealab.ai, a platform designed to give away millions of business ideas and help people everywhere build them.

The move reverses the traditional playbook. Gross spent decades keeping ideas inside his incubator. Now he plans to distribute them at scale, and to pair the ideas with tools that help founders execute.

Who is Bill Gross?

Gross founded Idealab, the Pasadena-based startup incubator, in 1996. Over its history the firm has started more than 175 companies. That track record makes Gross one of the most prolific company builders in American business.

The new venture, Idealab.ai, carries the incubator's name into the AI era. The ".ai" suffix signals the mechanism: the platform will lean on artificial intelligence to generate and distribute business ideas.

What does Idealab.ai actually offer?

According to the announcement, the platform has two functions:

  • Give away millions of business ideas, free, to people everywhere
  • Help those same people build the ideas into working companies

The second part matters more than the first. An idea alone has never been the scarce resource. Gross is betting that execution support — the kind his incubator has provided for decades — is what turns a free idea into a business.

Why give away ideas?

Gross built his career on the premise that ideas plus incubation create companies. Idealab.ai extends that premise to anyone with an internet connection. Instead of selecting a handful of founders per year, the platform can serve a global pool.

The scale is the point. An incubator starts companies one at a time. A platform that distributes millions of ideas, backed by AI tools, can reach orders of magnitude more builders.

What comes next?

Idealab.ai has launched with a clear promise: millions of ideas, available to everyone, plus help building them. The test will be whether the platform's execution support can match the volume of ideas it gives away. For now, Gross has opened the pipeline he spent decades keeping private.
