Elon Musk has spent at least $445.77 million on Republican-aligned political groups this election cycle, making him the largest single-cycle political donor in modern US history. The figure comes from US Federal Election Commission data as of 29 October and covers donations made since last year.
The scale is hard to contextualize, but the numbers do the work. Musk's midterm spending could fund half a dozen SpaceX rocket launches or buy thousands of Tesla Cybertrucks. At the Tesla Diner in Los Angeles, it would cover more than 31.9 million cheeseburgers.
What changed since 2024?
Only last year, Musk claimed he would step away from large-scale political donations after putting nearly $300 million toward Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. FEC data shows the opposite. His spending ramped up by about $200 million in the final two months of campaigning alone.
The midterms total already exceeds what Musk gave in the 2024 presidential race, when he held rallies and appeared on stage next to Trump. This cycle he has been less visible — potentially reflecting the US public's dislike of him, according to the source — but behind the scenes he has greatly increased his financial support for Republicans.
His goal, per the reporting, is to help the Trump administration retain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. Current polls predict Democrats will achieve a majority. His outlay dwarfs the efforts of megadonors like George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, and outpaces every other donor this cycle, including fellow tech moguls like Marc Andreessen, who also started his own Super Pac. Musk has put more into this cycle than every top Silicon Valley donor — including himself — spent on the 2024 presidential election combined.
Where did the $446m go?
Musk's money has flowed primarily into Republican-aligned Super Pacs. The largest single contribution — $216 million — went to his own America Pac, which has targeted 43 House and Senate races across the US with television commercials, digital ads, text messages and mailers.
America Pac made 839 independent expenditures in House races and 623 in Senate races across 17 states. Spending varies sharply by state, with battlegrounds like Michigan and Arizona receiving more support.
The Pac has spent the most in Musk's home state of Texas, where the Senate contest between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton has become the most expensive race of the midterms. America Pac has poured more than $33 million into electing Paxton. Separately, Musk contributed $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which also supports Paxton's campaign.
How aggressive are the ads?
Much of America Pac's output consists of attack ads against Democratic candidates such as Talarico, often accusing them of being radical socialists or targeting their support for transgender rights. The Pac spent $28 million on anti-Talarico content, including between $300,000 and $350,000 in October on a single Google ad.
"James Talarico supports parents being charged with child abuse if they do not support transitioning their children," the ad stated. It ran more than 10 million times over an eight-day period.
Musk has amplified the messaging personally. He reposted America Pac content to his more than 200 million followers on X, the platform he owns. One October post shared an America Pac attack ad and claimed: "Talarico wants to trans your kids and destroy the border."
What are the stakes for Musk?
The election outcome matters directly to Musk's business interests. He has closely aligned himself with the Trump administration and benefited from its lax approach to regulating tech and artificial intelligence. SpaceX has also deepened its government ties this year, landing lucrative contracts for Trump's missile defense program and for the use of Musk's Grok AI chatbot in the Pentagon.
Even at $446 million, Musk's political spending remains a tiny fraction of the centibillionaire's overall assets. But the precedent — one donor outspending an entire donor class — now shapes how the wealthy can move US elections.
