What's News

  • Eligibility is limited to independently owned, brick-and-mortar U.S. businesses with no more than four locations.
  • Selection factors include business longevity, uniqueness of offerings, community giving, and customer reviews and social media engagement.
  • The list covers all types of local businesses across all 50 states.

Entrepreneur Media has opened the selection process for its 2026 America's Favorite Mom & Pop Shops® list, restricting eligibility to independently owned, brick-and-mortar U.S. businesses operating no more than four locations.

The annual ranking, published by Entrepreneur Media LLC, celebrates what the company calls America's most beloved local businesses. This year's call for submissions asks readers a direct question: "Is there a business in your community that you're proud to be a patron of?"

The entry bar is deliberately strict. Beyond the four-location cap and the requirement of U.S. independent ownership, the publication weighs a defined set of factors: how long a business has operated, how unique its offerings are, how much its owners give back to their communities, and how frequently customers leave reviews or engage with the brand on social media. Entrepreneur then curates the final list to ensure coverage of all types of local businesses across all 50 states.

The editors frame the list as more than a popularity contest. "It's our way of celebrating America's most beloved local businesses and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs," the publication states.

The economic logic behind the ranking is straightforward. Small, independent businesses are run by, in Entrepreneur's words, "people dedicated to the city or town you call home." The publication argues these owners "add color, history, and real human faces to Main Street."

What This Year's Honorees Share

Entrepreneur reports one common trait among the businesses it selected this cycle. "They go to great lengths to lend a personal touch to every transaction," the editors write. The company positions that finding as a strategic lesson for the broader market: "And in a time when business can feel increasingly impersonal, that's worth emulating."

For small-business owners, the implication is concrete. Customer review volume, social media engagement, community involvement and longevity all feed directly into the selection formula — the same signals that increasingly drive consumer discovery and local search rankings.

The publication acknowledges the list captures only a fraction of the field. "Of course, there's thousands more amazing businesses that deserve the spotlight too — which is what future lists are for," the editors note.

Entrepreneur is promoting the initiative alongside its Entrepreneur Daily newsletter, which the company describes as delivering "the news and resources you need today to help you build your business better." Disclosure: Entrepreneur Media LLC and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some products and services through links in the original announcement.

Nominations and future editions will determine which local operators make the cut — and the four-location ceiling means the list will remain a showcase for genuinely small-scale, owner-run enterprises rather than expanding regional chains.
