Eric Schmidt owns roughly 1% of Anthropic, and the AI company's anticipated IPO could turn that stake into one of the biggest personal windfalls of the current listing cycle, Storyboard18 reports.

The former Google CEO holds about a 1% position in the Claude maker, according to the report. Anthropic's expected public debut now puts a concrete number on what that holding could be worth: whatever valuation the market assigns at listing, Schmidt's slice moves with it dollar for dollar.

Who is cashing in?

Schmidt ran Google as CEO from 2001 to 2011 and has since built a reputation as one of Silicon Valley's most active individual tech investors. His Anthropic position is the standout in that portfolio, Storyboard18 reports, because the company sits at the center of the AI race alongside OpenAI and Google.

Anthropic builds the Claude family of AI models and has become one of the most closely watched private companies in the sector. A public listing would mark one of the first major AI-lab IPOs, and early shareholders like Schmidt would get the first liquid market for their shares.

What does a 1% stake mean at IPO?

The math is blunt. At any listing valuation, Schmidt's reported 1% equals one-hundredth of that figure, before dilution, lockups or selling costs. If demand for AI exposure pushes the debut pricing higher, the stake's value scales up on the first day of trading.

That's the mechanics behind the "massive IPO windfall" Storyboard18 describes. Schmidt hasn't disclosed what he paid for the stake or when he acquired it. What's on the record is the size — about 1% — and the direction: up, if the listing lands as expected.

Why this IPO matters beyond one investor

Schmidt's payday is the headline, but the signal matters more. A successful Anthropic listing would give public investors their first direct exposure to a frontier AI lab and set a pricing benchmark for the whole category.

It would also test whether private-market enthusiasm for AI — the force that minted Anthropic's valuation in the first place — survives contact with public shareholders. Watch the filing details when they arrive; the terms will show how much of the company floats and how much insiders like Schmidt can sell, and when.
