How did one bank deal lift October’s total?
India’s private equity and venture capital investments topped $8 billion across 106 deals in October 2026, according to market research firm Venture Intelligence. Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings supplied $5.6 billion through an equity investment in IDBI Bank, pushing the month to its highest level in more than four years.
Venture Intelligence reported that October exceeded September’s $6.1 billion across 125 deals by at least $1.9 billion. Investment rose nearly 50% year on year, from $5.5 billion across 136 deals in October 2025, while deal count fell by 30. October’s value gain therefore came with fewer transactions.
Venture Intelligence’s figures imply the $5.6 billion Fairfax investment equaled 70% of the stated $8 billion October tally. The other 105 deals represented roughly $2.4 billion on that basis, making the headline more concentrated than the dollar figure initially suggests.
Takeaway: October’s record depended on larger transactions, not more of them.
Which mega deals drove the surge?
Venture Intelligence classified five deals above $100 million as mega deals. Together, they accounted for $7 billion, or nearly 88% of the stated monthly total. IDBI Bank represented about 80% of that mega-deal capital.
- KKR: $632 million investment in Gentari, the Indian renewable energy arm of Malaysia’s state-owned PETRONAS.
- Brookfield: $450 million acquisition of ESR India’s operating logistics and industrial portfolio.
The two named transactions supplied $1.082 billion. The report did not identify the other two mega deals among the five.
Venture Intelligence founder Arun Natarajan said the IDBI-Fairfax deal “was the largest private equity investment in India since 2020.” He added: “While the mega deal majorly boosted October investment figures, the month also saw continued focus on infrastructure sectors, especially by large private equity investors.”
Takeaway: Five large transactions supplied nearly seven-eighths of October’s capital.
Has the recovery spread beyond mega deals?
India’s PE-VC investment reached $39.7 billion across 1,171 deals in 2026 through October, Venture Intelligence reported, after activity accelerated in August, September and October following a tepid start to the year. The year-to-date total already exceeded $39 billion across 1,425 deals for all of 2025.
That comparison is not like-for-like: 2026 covers 10 months, while 2025 covers 12. Still, Venture Intelligence’s figures put 2026 roughly $700 million ahead on capital despite 254 fewer deals, pointing to larger transactions rather than broader participation.
Venture Intelligence’s October data also split clearly by funding stage:
- Early stage: $377 million, up $73 million, or 24%, from $304 million in October 2025.
- Growth stage: $584 million, down $416 million, or nearly 42%, from $1 billion.
- Late stage: $240 million, down $1.16 billion, or nearly 83%, from $1.4 billion.
Early-stage capital grew, but growth-stage and late-stage financing contracted sharply as the aggregate leaned on one bank transaction and other large deals. The monthly headline does not show a parallel recovery across funding stages.
Takeaway: The annual total has surpassed 2025, but October’s funding remained concentrated in large transactions.
What could change this reading?
The $8 billion tally combines unlike assets: a bank equity investment, a portfolio acquisition and venture investments. Venture Intelligence’s classification puts them in one PE-VC total, although the data do not establish that the amount represents new funding for Indian startups.
The published Venture Intelligence figures do not specify Fairfax’s post-transaction ownership percentage, IDBI Bank’s implied valuation or how the series treats exits elsewhere. They establish reported deal value and count, not the economic terms behind the headline.
November and December will test whether October marked a broader funding cycle or another concentrated capital event. Another $8 billion-plus month driven by large acquisitions would lift full-year funding without repairing the decline in growth- and late-stage investment.
Takeaway: A durable recovery requires broader participation across deal sizes, not another concentration of capital in a few mega deals.
