What's News

  • James Murdoch acquired a stake approaching 50% of Vox Media, WBUR reports.
  • The deal follows his loss in the succession battle for the family business.
  • His brother Lachlan Murdoch won the contest and runs Fox Corp and News Corp.
  • James Murdoch left the family companies' board in 2020.

James Murdoch has acquired a stake approaching 50% of Vox Media, the digital publisher behind Vox, New York Magazine and The Verge, WBUR reports. The deal makes him one of the largest individual shareholders in one of the biggest independent digital media companies in the United States.

The purchase follows Murdoch's loss in the succession battle for his family's business, News Corp and Fox Corp, the global media empire built by his father, Rupert Murdoch. His brother Lachlan Murdoch won that contest and now runs the conservative-leaning Fox and News Corp operations.

James Murdoch left the family companies' board in 2020. Since then he has positioned himself as an investor in media ventures that sit far from the editorial line of Fox News, building a portfolio through his investment vehicle, Lupa Systems.

Why does the deal matter?

Vox Media represents the kind of digital-first journalism business that James Murdoch has repeatedly backed since his exit from the family empire. The company owns a portfolio of well-known brands and has been expanding through acquisitions in recent years.

For Vox Media, the investment brings in a deep-pocketed backer at a difficult moment for digital publishing, where advertising revenue remains volatile and traffic from search and social platforms has become less predictable.

What does it signal about the Murdoch split?

The transaction underlines how complete the break between James Murdoch and the family business has become. Rather than returning to News Corp or Fox, he is placing capital into outlets whose editorial identity contrasts sharply with the outlets his family controls.

Rupert Murdoch spent decades building News Corp into a global force spanning newspapers, television and film. The succession fight that ended with Lachlan Murdoch in control was one of the most closely watched family battles in corporate media.

James Murdoch had already publicly distanced himself from the family's editorial direction before his departure, and his subsequent investments have reinforced that separation.

What comes next?

A near-majority stake gives James Murdoch significant influence over Vox Media's strategic direction, including potential expansion, further acquisitions or an eventual sale process. How actively he uses that position will shape whether Vox Media remains independent or becomes part of a larger media consolidation play.
