OMERS has promoted Laura Lenz to lead its venture capital unit, OMERS Ventures, according to The Globe and Mail.

The appointment puts an established insider in charge of one of Canada's most closely watched corporate venture operations. Lenz has spent years inside the OMERS system, most recently as chief investment officer of OMERS Platform Investments, the arm of the pension manager that houses its growth and technology holdings.

OMERS, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, manages retirement savings for municipal workers across the province. Its venture arm has backed Canadian technology companies for more than a decade and has served as a flagship vehicle in Ottawa's efforts to build a domestic growth-capital ecosystem.

The leadership change comes as Canadian pension funds face sustained pressure to deploy capital into late-stage private technology while defending returns across their broader portfolios. For OMERS Ventures, the question now is how Lenz will set cheque sizes, stage focus and geographic reach in a market where venture funding has tightened from its 2021 peak.

The Globe and Mail first reported the promotion. OMERS has not disclosed further details of the appointment, and Lenz's immediate investment priorities for the unit remain to be laid out.

Her elevation signals continuity rather than a strategic break: Lenz knows the fund's portfolio, its limited-partner mandate and its internal governance. Investors and founders in the Canadian tech sector will watch whether that continuity translates into larger commitments to domestic startups or a more selective, global deal book.
