What's News

  • PEI Group announced on Thursday the launch of PEI Private Equity, merging four brands into one platform.
  • Dan Primack founded PE Hub in 2006; the brand is now retired after 20 years.
  • The platform covers more than 50,000 private equity funds from launch to exit.
  • It contains data on more than 150,000 investor commitments.
  • PEI Group CEO Edouard Tavernier announced the launch in a press release.

PEI Group is folding four of its best-known titles — Private Equity International, PE Hub, Buyouts and Venture Capital Journal — into a single platform called PEI Private Equity, effectively retiring the PE Hub brand two decades after its founding.

The company announced the launch on Thursday, describing the new product as a "single intelligence hub for professionals working globally across the asset class." For Dan Primack, who founded PE Hub in 2006, the consolidation reads as an obituary. "The site I launched 20 years ago, seems to have met its maker. Or at least the brand has (along with Venture Capital Journal and Buyouts)," he wrote on social media.

What does the merged platform actually offer?

PEI Group says the consolidation is about speed and decision-making. The platform will help professionals "who need to know what's happening" act more quickly and with greater conviction by putting the company's information on one site, according to the company.

The scale of the underlying data is considerable. The media group's coverage spans:

  • More than 50,000 private equity funds, tracked from launch to exit
  • Data on more than 150,000 investor commitments

That combined dataset, previously spread across four separate publications, now sits behind a single subscription product. The company pitched the move as a way to give dealmakers one connected view of the asset class rather than four fragmented ones.

PEI Group CEO Edouard Tavernier framed the launch as a continuation of the company's position in the market. "For over 2 decades, PEI has been at the centre of the global private equity ecosystem. We've broken the stories, tracked the capital and convened the people who shape the asset class," Tavernier said in a press release.

How was the move rolled out?

The consolidation didn't arrive without warning. Adam Le, one of PEI Group's senior editors, teased the change in an online post last week.

"This has been exciting to work on, to say the least," Le wrote. "PEI Private Equity will bring together Private Equity International, Buyouts, PE Hub and Venture Capital Journal on a single, connected platform. Get the full picture in one place – very soon."

That post confirmed the four-brand scope days before the formal Thursday announcement. It also signaled that the merger had been in the works internally for some time, with editorial staff involved in building the combined product.

Why does the founder see it as a brand's end?

Primack's commentary cut against the company's upbeat framing. He attributed the consolidation to institutional drift rather than strategic vision.

"Not surprising given the lack of innovation and ownership turnover, but still sad to see. So much work went into creating it," he said.

Primack founded PE Hub in 2006 and built it into a staple read for private equity dealmakers before his tenure at the brand ended. His reference to "ownership turnover" points to PEI Group's history of changes in corporate control — context the company's own announcement left out entirely.

His remarks underscore a broader tension in B2B media: consolidation often delivers operational efficiency and a stronger data product, but it erases titles that spent decades building distinct editorial identities and reader loyalty.

What's at stake for PEI Group?

The bet is that professionals will pay for one integrated intelligence product covering funds, commitments and deal flow across the entire asset class — from venture capital through buyouts — rather than for four separate publications.

PEI Group now covers the private equity lifecycle end to end on a single platform: more than 50,000 funds from launch to exit, and a commitments database exceeding 150,000 records. Whether the merged hub preserves the editorial voices that built each brand's audience — the question Primack implicitly raised — will determine if this reads as a relaunch or a retirement.
