What's News
- Reddit forecast Q4 sales of $1.00–$1.03 billion, below Wall Street's $1.05 billion expectation.
- U.S. daily active users fell from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million in Q3, down 2% year-over-year.
- Global daily active users were flat quarter-over-quarter at 130.3 million.
- Reddit announced the search-ads test on Tuesday with a select group of eligible advertisers.
- Reddit plans a gradual shift to a logged-in experience, starting outside the U.S.
Reddit will start placing ads inside its search results pages, the company announced on Tuesday, as it scrambles to squeeze more revenue from existing users after weak fourth-quarter guidance and shrinking search traffic.
The test opens a high-intent surface to advertisers: users typing product queries like "espresso station" could see ads for espresso machines, coffee, or mugs, while a search for "home office setup" could surface monitors, desks, and office chairs.
"Ads in search may appear based on a range of factors, including contextual relevance to a user's search query," Reddit said in its announcement. "This is an initial test with a select group of eligible advertisers. During this test, we will evaluate and understand how users respond to these ads so we can refine the experience for users and advertisers over time."
Why is Reddit adding ads now?
The timing follows a painful earnings report. Last week Reddit beat Wall Street's estimates for revenue and earnings per share, yet its stock still dropped. The reason was guidance: Reddit forecast fourth-quarter sales of $1 billion to $1.03 billion, below analyst expectations of $1.05 billion.
The shortfall traces back to Google. Reddit's search traffic referrals are declining because Google has shifted to an AI-powered search experience, where features like AI Mode answer questions directly on the results page and send fewer clicks to publishers' websites.
User numbers tell the same story. Global daily active users were flat quarter-over-quarter in Q3 at 130.3 million. U.S. daily active users fell from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million, down 2% year-over-year. The company warned that if the trend continues, daily active users could decline by a low double-digit percentage by the fourth quarter.
So the math is simple. Fewer new users arriving from Google means Reddit must earn more from the users it already has. Search ads are the first visible lever.
What does the logged-in shift change?
The search ads could gain value from a second move Reddit announced during earnings: a planned shift to a logged-in experience. The company said the transition will happen gradually, starting in markets outside the U.S.
The login requirement serves two purposes. It protects Reddit's site from unauthorized AI scraping, and it increases the platform's value to advertisers. Logged-in users are worth more because they provide additional signals about their interests and behavior, which allows better-targeted, more profitable ads.
In effect, Reddit is trading open reach for monetizable attention. That mirrors a broader industry response to AI search engines that read content without sending visitors back — publishers can no longer count on referral traffic, so they must convert whoever stays into higher-value inventory.
What happens next?
The search-ad test starts with a small group of eligible advertisers, and Reddit says it will study how users respond before refining the format. The stakes are real: with U.S. users shrinking and guidance already below expectations, search ads plus the logged-in shift are Reddit's two clearest paths to growing revenue without growing traffic — and investors will judge both when fourth-quarter results land.
