- SambaNova raised $1 billion in a new funding round at an $11 billion valuation, per Reuters.
- The valuation more than doubles the $5 billion mark SambaNova reached in its 2021 round.
- The company builds AI chips and full-stack systems competing with Nvidia, with a growing focus on AI inference workloads.
AI chip startup SambaNova is now valued at $11 billion after raising $1 billion in a new funding round, Reuters reports.
The round marks a sharp step up for the company, which builds AI chips and systems that compete with Nvidia in the market for artificial intelligence hardware. The $11 billion valuation places SambaNova among the most richly valued private semiconductor firms in the United States.
The $1 billion raise signals continued investor appetite for AI infrastructure companies, even as venture investors grow more selective elsewhere in tech. Chipmakers that can offer alternatives to Nvidia's dominant position have attracted outsized funding over the past two years.
SambaNova designs its own silicon and packages it into full-stack AI systems, positioning itself as a provider of high-performance compute for large AI workloads. The company sells its technology to enterprises and, in recent years, has pushed deeper into the fast-growing market for AI inference — the work of running trained AI models, as opposed to training them.
Demand for inference compute has surged as companies move AI models from development into production at scale. That shift has benefited infrastructure providers capable of serving high-volume, low-latency AI workloads, and it underpins the investor case for SambaNova's hardware strategy.
The funding round gives SambaNova fresh capital to expand its operations, deepen its technology development, and compete for large enterprise and government AI contracts. Rivals in the custom and alternative AI silicon market — including Groq, Cerebras, and the major cloud providers' in-house chip programs — are all racing to capture the same demand.
Reuters did not immediately report the full list of investors in the round or detailed deal terms beyond the valuation and amount raised. The company's prior investors have included SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Intel Capital, Google Ventures, and Walden International, according to previous disclosures.
The $11 billion valuation more than doubles the company's worth from its earlier fundraising. SambaNova reached a $5 billion valuation in 2021, during the previous peak of investor enthusiasm for AI chip startups.
The raise lands at a moment when spending on AI data centers and accelerated computing has reached record levels. Hyperscalers and enterprises are committing tens of billions of dollars annually to AI infrastructure, and suppliers of alternative silicon are competing for a share of that budget.
For SambaNova, the challenge now is converting a headline valuation into sustained commercial traction against Nvidia's entrenched ecosystem of chips, software, and developer tools. The $1 billion in new capital buys the company time and scale to make that case to customers.
