Starbucks Shuttered 250 Stores — Here's Where They Are

Starbucks has closed roughly 250 coffeehouses across North America, and California absorbed the deepest cut: 43 shuttered locations, followed by New York with 16.

The company announced the move last Thursday but refused to publish a list of affected stores. Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said the closures would take effect "approximately 250 coffeehouses later this week," according to Fast Company. He attributed the decision to stores that could not achieve "a path to acceptable financial performance" and could not "consistently deliver the experience we want for customers."

The cull removes about 1% of Starbucks' roughly 18,000 locations in the region.

Four days after the announcement, Starbucks still had not released a list. That left employees and customers to piece the picture together themselves. By Monday, the closures were visible on Google and in Starbucks' own store locator tool.

The tally so far

NBC affiliate KGW8 in Portland, Oregon, was among the first outlets to compile confirmed closures. Its count spans 33 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.

California dominates the list, with closures concentrated in Los Angeles (seven locations), San Diego (five), Sacramento (five) and San Luis Obispo (three). New York follows with 16 closures, including eight in Manhattan — among them 50 Lexington Ave., 99 Wall St. and 100 William St.

Other heavily affected states include Texas with 14 closures, Florida with nine, Washington with six, Nebraska with five, Alabama with five, Arkansas with five and Arizona with five. Canada accounts for at least 17 closures across Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and other cities.

A separate list surfaced on Reddit, compiled by user WhoNeedsRAM, who scanned Starbucks store data and flagged every location listed as closed between Sunday and Tuesday. The Redditor cautions: "don't take this as gospel. It's picking up on a pattern in posted hours, not pulling from some official closure list." The majority of locations on the Reddit list match KGW8's tally, and the Reddit version ships with an interactive map.

Not the first cull

This is the second consecutive year Starbucks has cut about 1% of its North American footprint. Last year's closures left the company with around 18,300 locations at the end of its fiscal year.

Fast Company reported those earlier closures were part of CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" turnaround strategy, which aims to make stores more welcoming to guests and reverse declining sales.

For workers, the fallout is immediate. COO Grams said Starbucks will try to transfer affected employees to other roles where possible. Those who cannot be moved to other stores will receive severance. The company has not said how many employees will permanently lose their jobs.

Investors, for now, appear unfazed. Shares of Starbucks Corporation (Nasdaq: SBUX) rose 1.29% over the last trading day and were roughly flat in premarket trading Monday. The stock is up 12.97% year to date as of Friday's close, tracking roughly in line with the broader S&P 500.

Starbucks has not confirmed the closing locations or the number of employees being let go. Until it does, the media- and Reddit-assembled lists — corroborated by the company's own store locator — remain the best public record of which coffeehouses have gone dark.
