Tether led a $15 million Series A round in Mural, a New York-based payment infrastructure startup founded by former Palantir engineers, the company announced by email on Tuesday.

The round brings Mural's total funding to $28 million. North Island Ventures participated, alongside Mural's existing investors.

The deal matters because of what it signals. Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, is putting money into infrastructure that lets AI agents move money on behalf of people and businesses — a niche the industry now calls "agentic finance."

What does Mural actually build?

Mural provides fintechs and other platforms with the plumbing for managing accounts, payments, identity verification and regulatory compliance across traditional banking networks and blockchains. Its customers include payroll platform Deel and browser developer Opera.

The startup's founders came out of Palantir, the data analytics firm, and that lineage shows in the product's emphasis on compliance and control rather than raw payment speed.

Mural's infrastructure lets companies set transaction limits, restrict counterparties and require additional approvals for larger payments. Those guardrails address the questions of authorization and accountability that arise when autonomous software initiates and executes transactions on its own.

In practical terms: if an AI agent is paying invoices or settling invoices across borders, someone still has to answer to the bank, the regulator and the counterparty. Mural is selling that layer.

Why is Tether writing the check?

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the investment around the bridge between AI agents and the legacy financial system.

"As agents start moving money, that connection to the banks, payment networks and compliance systems the world still runs on becomes essential," Ardoino said in the statement.

The investment reflects Tether's growing interest in infrastructure beyond stablecoin issuance. Programmable payments are emerging as a potential use case for AI-powered financial services, and Tether appears to want a foothold in the rails that would carry them.

For Tether, $15 million is a modest bet relative to its stablecoin reserves, but it is a directional one. The company is positioning for a future in which autonomous software — not just people — is a routine counterparty in payments.

What does this change for practitioners?

For fintech and payments teams, the takeaway is that agentic finance is attracting real capital from established crypto players, not just venture experiments. Mural now has $28 million in total funding to expand infrastructure that handles the unglamorous but decisive parts of AI-driven payments: identity verification, compliance and transaction controls.

For companies building AI agents that touch money, Mural's toolset offers a path to doing so within banking and regulatory constraints — transaction caps, counterparty restrictions and approval thresholds — rather than around them.

The open question is adoption speed. Agentic finance remains early, and the safeguards Mural provides will be tested as autonomous transactions scale. With Tether's backing and customers like Deel and Opera already on board, Mural has the funding and the customer base to help shape how that testing plays out.
