What's News

  • TikTok launched a standalone TikTok Shop app in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines on iOS and Android
  • Social media consultant Matt Navarra first spotted the app; TikTok did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment
  • The app offers app-exclusive deals, free shipping offers, first-order benefits and in-app checkout
  • It's unknown whether the app will launch more widely or reach the United States
  • The move escalates rivalry with Amazon and Temu; Amazon previously launched the TikTok-like Inspire video feed

TikTok has quietly launched a standalone TikTok Shop app in four Southeast Asian markets, giving its e-commerce business a home of its own for the first time. The app is available now on iOS and Android in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, according to TechCrunch, which first reported the rollout after social media consultant Matt Navarra spotted it.

The move puts TikTok in more direct competition with Amazon and Temu, whose dedicated shopping apps already own the mobile checkout habits of millions of consumers. Until now, TikTok Shop has lived inside the main TikTok app. Splitting it out signals that parent company ByteDong's short-video giant is prepared to invest more heavily in social commerce — giving Shop its own dedicated destination rather than keeping it a feature inside a feed.

TikTok did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment regarding the rollout.

What does the standalone app actually offer?

Per the app's description, users get:

  • Personalized product recommendations
  • Shopping through live streams and short-form videos
  • App-exclusive deals, including free shipping offers and exclusive first-order benefits
  • In-app checkout, with "secure payments for safe checkout"
  • Order tracking and customer support

The app-exclusive deals matter most here. They're a deliberate incentive to shift purchasing behavior away from the main TikTok app and into the new storefront, where TikTok can shape the entire shopping journey rather than share the screen with entertainment content.

It's unknown whether TikTok plans to release the app more widely, or bring it to the United States at all.

Why the U.S. question is the big one

If TikTok does bring the standalone app to American shelves, the competitive set widens considerably. Beyond Amazon and Temu, TikTok would be taking on big-box retailers like Walmart and Target — chains whose customers have grown accustomed to routinely ordering through the stores' own apps. That's a different fight than winning impulse buys inside a video feed; it means competing for habitual, repeat purchasing.

For merchants already selling through TikTok Shop, a dedicated app could mean more screen time from committed buyers — but also a new surface to optimize for, with its own discovery and deal mechanics.

A full-circle rivalry with Amazon

The launch creates something of a full-circle moment in the TikTok-Amazon rivalry. Amazon previously introduced a TikTok-like short-form video feed called Inspire, designed to draw consumers' attention away from apps like TikTok and drive sales on Amazon's own platform instead. TikTok is now making the same play in reverse: with a standalone commerce app, it wants to pull shoppers away from platforms like Amazon and fuel more purchases inside its own ecosystem.

Two giants, in other words, are now copying each other's homework — each betting that the other's core format can be bolted onto its own business.

Part of a broader expansion beyond social media

The shopping app marks another step in TikTok's effort to branch out beyond social media. The company was once primarily focused on social networking and entertainment, but it has gradually pushed into adjacent territory. Beyond TikTok Shop, the platform has added games, restaurant guides, sports hubs, hotel booking, and microdramas, and it is also exploring payments.

The pattern is clear: TikTok is building toward becoming a full consumer platform, not just a place where people watch videos. A standalone shopping app is the most commercially aggressive move in that push so far — and its four-market rollout looks like a test bed. Watch whether Southeast Asian download and purchase data justifies a wider launch, and eventually a U.S. arrival.
