Twilio is joining the S&P 500, replacing Warner Bros Discovery, which is set to merge with Paramount.
The change is the latest shakeup in the benchmark index. S&P Dow Jones Indices reshuffles its components periodically to keep the S&P 500 aligned with the shifting makeup of the U.S. equity market, and corporate mergers frequently force a seat to open up.
Warner Bros Discovery, a current S&P 500 component, is due to combine with Paramount. Once that merger is completed, the combined media entity will no longer hold a standalone slot in the index, freeing the position that Twilio will fill.
Twilio, the cloud communications software company, gets the nod as the replacement. Inclusion in the S&P 500 carries practical weight beyond prestige: index-tracking funds that manage hundreds of billions of dollars buy shares of every company added to the benchmark, and passive flows typically lift a stock's liquidity and trading volume.
For Twilio, the addition marks a milestone in its trajectory as a publicly traded software company. It also puts the stock in front of a far broader base of institutional investors who mandate S&P 500 membership for their portfolios.
For index watchers, the move underscores how consolidation in media continues to reshape the S&P 500's lineup. The Warner Bros Discovery–Paramount merger, once complete, will consolidate two of the largest U.S. media names into a single entity — and the index will adjust accordingly, with Twilio taking the vacated seat.
