Canadian agricultural innovators can compete for a $150,000 prize and up to $1.5 million in follow-on investment under a new challenge launched Oct. 20. Calgary-based Carrot Ventures, an agricultural technology venture studio operated by Verdex Capital, announced the Food & AgTech Innovation Challenge in collaboration with XPRIZE Canada Hub.
The competition targets technologies that improve agricultural productivity, reduce resource consumption and strengthen resilience across Canada's food and agriculture sectors. For innovators in Saskatchewan's agricultural industry, the challenge offers a route to tools that help producers boost efficiency while addressing pressures on modern farming operations.
"Some of the most exciting breakthroughs in food and agriculture never make it into the hands of the people who could benefit from them," said Collin Phillip, CEO of Verdex Capital. "We want to help change that. We're looking for innovations that tackle real challenges on farms and across the food system, and innovators who are ready to take the next step."
What are the two competition categories?
The challenge splits into two tracks. Food Innovation covers food processing, preservation, packaging, safety, traceability, distribution, waste reduction and ingredients.
The second track, Produce More with Less, targets technologies that raise agricultural output while cutting the resources required. That includes agricultural biologicals, animal health, digital farming, robotics and automation.
For Saskatchewan producers, innovations in precision agriculture, automated equipment, livestock health and more efficient resource management could find practical use across grain and livestock operations.
Organizers will evaluate applications on four criteria:
- Customer value
- Measurable benefits
- Technical innovation
- Potential to build a scalable business
The competition is open to applicants worldwide. Submissions will also be assessed on their potential application to Canada's agriculture and food industries.
How does the challenge move technology to market?
Research by Verdex Capital identifies a persistent problem in agricultural innovation: promising technologies stall between the research and development stage and commercial use. Carrot Ventures aims to close that gap by identifying promising technologies, assembling experienced leadership teams, establishing new companies and supporting initial financing.
The XPRIZE Canada Hub partnership is designed to connect innovators with industry networks, investment opportunities and commercialization expertise.
Beyond the $150,000 prize, selected opportunities may be considered for up to $1.5 million in follow-on investment. That funding isn't guaranteed — it depends on due diligence and investment approval. Organizers say participants could also gain industry connections, technology validation and support in bringing their innovations to market.
"With the right people, partnerships and capital behind them, those ideas can become businesses that make a lasting difference," Phillip said.
When do applications close?
Applications for the Food & AgTech Innovation Challenge will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2026, with finalist evaluations and winner announcements expected in January 2027. The challenge is open to researchers, entrepreneurs and technology developers working on technologies applicable to Canada's agricultural and food sectors. Eligibility details and application forms are available at carrotventures.com/xprize-challenge.
Verdex Capital is a Canadian agricultural and food venture capital firm focused on supporting technologies and businesses that advance innovation throughout the industry. With Saskatchewan's agtech ecosystem drawing fresh backing — from Innovation Saskatchewan's renewed $300,000 support for the AGTECH ACCELERATOR to Farm Credit Canada's $2 billion innovation commitment — the challenge adds another financing channel for founders trying to move farm-gate technology from lab to field.
