More than $500 million in annual revenue: Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies, founded by Kam Ghaffarian, became NASA’s second-largest engineering services contractor before Armenia honored his space and energy career.

Public Radio of Armenia reported that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan presented him with the State Award for Global Contribution to High Technologies. Ghaffarian’s portfolio spans lunar landers, private space infrastructure, nuclear power and space propulsion.

The report identified Ghaffarian as co-founder and executive chairman of X-energy, Intuitive Machines, Axiom Space and Quantum Space. Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Khachatryan, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan and Minister of High-Tech Industry and Artificial Intelligence Davit Tadevosyan attended. Representatives of the legislative and executive branches and other guests also attended.

What did the award recognize?

Pashinyan described Ghaffarian’s career as proof that a childhood dream can become a technological achievement with global significance. According to the prime minister, the first human Moon landing in 1969 inspired Ghaffarian to pursue science and space technology.

Pashinyan highlighted Intuitive Machines’ 2024 touchdown of the Odysseus lunar lander on the Moon. The landing marked the first U.S. lunar landing in 52 years.

He also credited Axiom Space with conducting the first fully private crewed mission to the International Space Station. He said the company was working to develop a commercial space station.

He linked Ghaffarian’s advanced-energy work to the wider interconnection of technological fields. In his presentation speech, Pashinyan said:

“Today, it is a great honor for me, on behalf of the Republic of Armenia, to present the State Award for Global Contribution to High Technologies to Kam Ghaffarian, who has achieved remarkable success in science, engineering and technological entrepreneurship,” Pashinyan said.

How does Armenia plan to use technology?

Pashinyan said Armenia’s small geographical size does not limit its scientific and technological potential. He cited the country’s scientific and engineering traditions and set a goal of turning that potential into higher productivity, economic development and international competitiveness.

He said Armenia is developing artificial intelligence, advanced computing, space activities and innovative entrepreneurship. He also cited Armenia’s experience developing and launching ArmSat-1 and HAYASAT-1. He said Armenian specialists designed and built HAYASAT-1.

Pashinyan stated the country’s technology ambition this way:

“Our goal is not merely to use technologies developed by others. We want Armenian universities, scientists, engineers and companies to become creators of global technological value and participants in international value-creation systems,” he said.

What cooperation could follow the award?

Pashinyan said Armenia wants closer cooperation between Ghaffarian’s companies and its scientific, educational and technology organizations. He said the possibility had already been discussed with the entrepreneur. He also framed the award as inspiration for students, young scientists and young entrepreneurs. He said they could learn from people who had shaped the future through their work.

Ghaffarian thanked Armenia for recognizing his contributions and presenting the state award. He said his work is driven by a desire to improve the human condition and expand humanity’s knowledge. He also expressed hope for meaningful partnerships with Armenian technology companies and organizations in other sectors.

“It is truly a great honor for me. I only regret one thing: that I did not visit Armenia earlier. Let me say that I love Armenia, and I will come again,” he said.

“I am very grateful for this honor. Mr. Prime Minister, I promised everyone that I would return to Armenia, and I promise I will. I sincerely hope to establish real cooperation with technology companies and other sectors,” he added.

How did Ghaffarian build his portfolio?

Public Radio of Armenia described Ghaffarian as an entrepreneur in the space and energy sectors with more than 37 years of experience. It said he founded several companies focused on space exploration, energy technologies and scientific innovation.

He began his entrepreneurial career in 1994 by founding Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies, or SGT. The company provides information technology, engineering, scientific applications and mission operations services to government clients.

The report said SGT became NASA’s second-largest engineering services contractor, supporting International Space Station operations and astronaut training. The company generated more than $500 million in annual revenue. KBR subsequently acquired it.

The report also said Ghaffarian currently chairs X-energy’s board. X-energy develops nuclear energy solutions for terrestrial power generation and space propulsion systems. Ghaffarian co-founded Intuitive Machines and serves as its executive chairman.

The company is publicly traded and provides scientific and technological solutions under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. Ghaffarian is also co-founder and executive chairman of Axiom Space, Quantum Space and IBX.

Axiom Space is a private space infrastructure company. Quantum Space develops space infrastructure. IBX is an innovation and investment company.

Public Radio of Armenia also described Ghaffarian as a philanthropist and founder of a nonprofit dedicated to advancing scientific research and exploring the possibilities of interstellar travel.

It listed degrees in computer science and engineering from The Catholic University of America and Capitol College, a master’s degree in information management sciences from George Washington University, a doctorate in management information systems from Kennedy-Western University and a doctorate in technology from Capitol Technology University.

The award’s practical test now rests on follow-through. Pashinyan said possible cooperation had already been discussed, while Ghaffarian promised to return and establish real cooperation with Armenian technology companies and other sectors.
