Chris Paul has joined Owl Ventures as a venture partner, months after retiring from the NBA in 2026 following a 21-year career.

Owl Ventures holds $2.2 billion in committed capital and targets education and workforce innovation, according to a press release. Its portfolio companies currently serve more than 700 million users.

Paul announced the move on Instagram. "Excited to join Owl Ventures as a Venture Partner," he wrote. "They are doing amazing work around education and opportunity. Owl backs entrepreneurs who are finding new ways to help people learn, help teachers teach, and help the next generation build skills to prepare for their futures. Their companies reach hundreds of millions of learners across the world. It has always been important to me and my family to support education and create opportunities for those coming up. Proud to be part of it."

In the role, Paul will focus on mentoring, developing emerging leaders, identifying new opportunities within the community, and building meaningful connections with founders and businesses outside the sports industry, per the press release.

The appointment is not Paul's first seat at the investing table. According to Crunchbase, he has 22 companies in his investment portfolio, including Goalsetter, a fintech platform, and PlayersTV, a streaming platform. He also holds a deal with consumer goods and food-delivery company Gopuff, whose products are sold at H-E-B and 1,000 Walmart stores.

Paul has built media assets as well. In May 2025, he launched Ohh Dip!!! Entertainment, a bespoke, full-service media production company, with his brother CJ Paul, AFROTECH™ previously reported.

His credentials extend to labor leadership. Paul served eight years as president of the National Basketball Players Association before retiring.

Owl Ventures framed the hire as part of a broader strategic push. The firm says it is expanding its focus on the companies that will shape the next phase of the AI-driven economy.

"As AI reshapes how people learn, work, and build careers, lifelong learning and the ability to turn new skills into opportunity are becoming essential," the press release reads. "We believe the companies defining this next era will pair technology with an even greater emphasis on real-world context, trusted relationships, and human insight."

That thesis explains the fit. Owl Ventures is betting that distribution and trust — not just algorithms — will decide which learning companies win the AI transition, and Paul brings a two-decade public profile and deep ties to athletes, founders and communities that most venture partners cannot match.

The move signals where Paul intends to spend his post-playing years: channeling his platform into education-focused dealmaking at scale.
