Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, goes on sale today, and anyone ordering online now faces a ship date of January 22. That single date tells the story. Apple's problem is not demand. It is supply.
Preorders opened on October 16. Shipping times slipped from days to weeks to months within that first day. The same day, Apple confirmed to the Financial Times that demand for the device was "extraordinary."
"The preorder demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary," an Apple spokesperson said. The company added that it was "working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers' hands as quickly as possible."
As of publication, Apple's website shows January 22 as the earliest ship date for every Duo model.
Where can you still walk in and buy one?
There is a workaround. Apple has confirmed that stores in select markets "will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers" today, as 9to5Mac reported. The full list of walk-in markets:
- Australia
- Austria
- Belgium
- Canada
- Germany
- Macao
- Italy (select Apple Stores only)
- Mexico
- Netherlands
- Singapore
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Türkiye
- United Kingdom
- United States
Do not expect shelves to stay stocked. Apple has stressed that walk-in inventory will be "limited," which means stores will likely sell out earlier in the day rather than later. The United States and the United Kingdom made the cut; the world's second-largest smartphone market, India, did not.
Which markets are excluded?
The Duo is going on sale in more countries than the walk-in list above. But Apple has confirmed that its stores in the following ten markets will have no units for walk-in customers today:
- China
- France
- Hong Kong
- India
- Japan
- Malaysia
- South Korea
- Taiwan
- Thailand
- United Arab Emirates
The exclusion of China is notable. That market anchors Apple's Asia manufacturing and remains one of its largest revenue sources outside the Americas.
What about carrier stores?
Apple Stores are not the only channel. Carriers are also selling the Duo directly to customers through contracts, which means Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile stores may hold walk-in units today. The odds there seem lower than at an Apple Store. Anyone determined to buy today, and willing to sign a carrier contract, can call local Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile locations to check stock.
Is there a faster route than waiting until January?
Yes, if you watch Apple.com tomorrow. Apple is advising customers who want a Duo sooner to check the online store on Saturday, October 24, for updated in-store pickup availability.
The mechanism is simple. Apple is pushing as many units off the assembly lines as it can, and it routes a share of that output to retail stores rather than to preorder fulfillment. That is why a customer who missed Day 1 may still secure a Duo in October or November, well before the January 22 ship date quoted online.
The short version: today favors walk-ins in sixteen markets, carrier contracts everywhere else in the launch footprint, and patience for everyone willing to wait for production to catch up.
