Meta has quietly launched Style Sketch, an AI fashion app that builds outfit ideas from clothes you already own — and its biggest edge is the Instagram connection baked right in.
The app works two ways. It connects to Instagram to build a virtual closet from photos you've posted, or you can add items manually by snapping a photo, recording a quick video, or uploading images from your camera roll. Style Sketch then suggests outfit combinations from your wardrobe, matched to your personal style.
There's a try-on layer too. Users can test outfits on a "realistic model matched to your body shape and skin tone," the app description reads.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra first spotted the app. It's currently available on iOS and Android in just three markets: Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Meta did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment, and it's unknown whether the company plans a wider rollout.
What does this change for the AI wardrobe market?
The core idea isn't new. Several apps already use AI to help users digitize their wardrobes and visualize new outfits, including the startup Alta. Even Google Photos offers tools that turn photos of your clothes into digital closets where you can create new outfit ideas.
So Meta is entering a crowded field late. To compete with what's already on the market, the company will likely rely less on the novelty of the idea and more on integration with Instagram, where users already have a visual record of their personal style. That's a real moat: years of posted photos mean the virtual closet builds itself.
The feature set goes beyond basic suggestions. Rather than relying on random recommendations, users can select a specific item from their wardrobe and get fresh outfit ideas built around it, according to the app description.
Travel planning is the sleeper feature
Style Sketch also handles trip packing. Enter your destination, trip length, and planned activities, and the app generates a day-by-day outfit plan that accounts for the weather forecast and your itinerary. For frequent travelers, that's arguably a more concrete use case than generic style advice.
One app in a broader Meta flood
Style Sketch is one of many AI apps Meta has shipped in recent months. The list includes:
- Waddle World — launched most recently, it looks essentially like a Tamagotchi clone with AI
- Pocket — a tool for vibe-coding games
- Vibes — lets users quickly generate AI-powered videos
The wave of new apps is deliberate strategy, not experimentation. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees the company plans to release far more apps than it has historically, as AI-driven efficiencies have made it faster and easier to ship new products.
For practitioners, that's the signal worth watching. Meta's app cadence has shifted from a handful of flagship launches to rapid, quiet releases tested in small markets — Style Sketch's three-country debut fits the pattern exactly. If the Instagram-closet hook proves sticky in Southeast Asia, expect it to surface in Meta's main apps or a broader standalone launch before the niche consolidates around smaller players like Alta.
