Morgan Stanley Capital Partners has acquired The Rapid Group, a Paterson, New Jersey-based provider of inspection, repair and maintenance services for rotating equipment and other critical infrastructure, for an undisclosed sum.
The deal gives MSCP ownership of a business serving more than 1,800 public- and private-sector customers across the Northeast. The Rapid Group, known as TRG, keeps mechanical and electrical infrastructure running and restores service when equipment fails.
Who is The Rapid Group?
The company has more than 50 years of operating history and a footprint spanning six states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Its work centers on pumps, motors, generators, and water and wastewater infrastructure, plus related maintenance, installation and repair services.
The customer base cuts across municipal, industrial, pharmaceutical, transportation and other sectors where equipment uptime is non-negotiable. Water utilities and pharmaceutical plants can't wait a week for a pump rebuild.
What does MSCP plan to do with it?
MSCP sees growth potential tied directly to the age of water and wastewater infrastructure across the Northeast — much of it decades old and increasingly in need of repair. The firm plans to invest in TRG's workforce and technical capabilities while expanding its geographic reach, pursuing both organic growth and acquisitions.
Eric Kanter, Managing Director and Head of Industrial Services at MSCP, laid out the thesis: "The acquisition of TRG underscores MSCP's focus on investing in businesses providing truly essential services. The company's services help customers maintain infrastructure that is fundamental to the operation of municipalities, businesses and institutions."
Kanter added: "TRG has built a differentiated platform, combining deep technical expertise, a dense regional footprint and a strong reputation for responsiveness and quality. We are excited to partner with TRG's team to invest in the company's people and capabilities, expand its geographic reach, and build on its track record of organic growth and strategic acquisitions."
The investment builds on MSCP's track record in industrial and infrastructure services. Prior deals in the sector include Apex Companies, Resource Innovations and Olsson.
What changes for TRG?
Management stays and keeps running its existing service model, but gains capital to broaden capabilities and serve more customers across the region.
Kevin Dice, CEO and President of The Rapid Group, framed the partnership from the operator's side: "Our team has spent decades earning the trust of customers who rely on TRG to keep mission-critical infrastructure systems operating safely and reliably. MSCP brings extensive experience supporting infrastructure services businesses in their growth journeys, and shares our commitment to our employees, customers and service-driven culture."
He continued: "This partnership will provide additional resources to strengthen our platform, broaden our capabilities and reach more customers while maintaining the responsiveness and technical quality that define TRG."
Who is the buyer?
Morgan Stanley Capital Partners is the middle-market private equity buyout team within Morgan Stanley Investment Management. The platform has invested for more than three decades and focuses on privately negotiated equity and equity-related investments across business services, consumer, healthcare, education and industrial markets.
The parent platform carries weight: Morgan Stanley Investment Management held approximately $2 trillion in assets under management or supervision as of June 30, 2026.
Who advised on the deal?
Harris Williams served as exclusive financial advisor to The Rapid Group, with McDermott Will & Schulte as legal counsel. William Blair advised MSCP, and Latham & Watkins provided legal counsel.
With aging Northeast water systems as a tailwind and a buyout shop behind it that has done this playbook before, TRG now has the balance sheet to grow past its six-state base.
