Poundland's management team is in "advanced talks" to lead a rescue bid for the struggling discount retailer, in a deal that could save more than 11,000 jobs.
The buyout team is understood to be negotiating with a financial backer, according to a report in The Guardian. Andy Bond, the former Asda chief executive, is understood to be part of the negotiations to take on the business.
Bond brings deep familiarity with the chain. He ran Poundland for a number of years from 2016, then stepped up to its former parent Pepco, before leaving in 2025. His involvement signals that any bid would rest on leadership with direct operating knowledge of the retailer rather than an outside turnaround specialist.
The talks come at a critical moment for the cut-price chain, which employs more than 11,000 people across the UK. A management-led buyout, if completed, would avert the most severe outcome for those workers — mass redundancies through administration — and keep the brand trading on the high street.
No deal terms, valuation or timetable have been disclosed, and there is no guarantee the negotiations will result in an agreement. The identity of the financial backer has not been confirmed.
For Poundland's workforce and landlords, the next milestone is whether the management team and its backer can convert "advanced talks" into a binding offer before the retailer's financial position deteriorates further.
