What's News

  • Reddit announced on Wednesday two homepage feed options: "For You" and "Following".
  • The "For You" feed mixes joined-community posts with algorithmic recommendations; "Following" shows only joined communities.
  • Reddit joins Instagram, X, Threads and Facebook in adopting TikTok-popularized "For You" feeds.
  • Reddit remembers which feed a user last viewed and returns them to it on reopening.
  • The global rollout runs over the next few weeks, per the company.

Reddit announced on Wednesday that users will now see two feed options when they open the platform: "For You" and "Following." With that move, Reddit becomes the latest major social platform to adopt the algorithm-driven "For You" feed popularized by TikTok, joining Instagram, X, Threads and Facebook.

The split is simple. The "For You" feed combines posts from communities users have joined with recommendations tailored to their interests. The "Following" feed displays only posts from the communities users have joined. Reddit says the feature will help users discover relevant communities and conversations they might not otherwise come across — and the company frames the redesign as a way to foster connection, participation, and belonging.

What does the new feed actually change?

In practice, the stakes are smaller than the announcement suggests. Reddit has long recommended posts from outside users' subscribed communities. The difference now is placement: the new layout gives those recommendations their own dedicated feed on the homepage, rather than mixing them into a single stream. That structural shift puts algorithmic discovery at the front door of the app instead of the margins.

The bet is that the redesigned feed nudges users to engage with content beyond the communities they already follow. It also brings Reddit in line with the recommendation-driven experience that has become standard across social media, where algorithms play a significant role in shaping what users see. For a platform that built its identity on subscription — users choosing exactly which communities appear in their feed — that is a real departure.

The company put its case in unusually human terms. "This new feed experience is a first step in helping drive discovery that leads to something novel and relevant – an idea, a connection, a unique perspective, or even a new interest," Reddit wrote in a blog post. "A more human internet is not just something you sit back and watch, it is something you find value in and want to participate in."

Will users accept algorithmic recommendations on the homepage?

Not everyone will welcome the change. Some users prefer the focused experience of seeing only posts from communities they've joined, without recommended content mixed into their home feed. That friction isn't hypothetical: some users who encountered the new feed during its initial testing phase have already expressed frustration with the change.

Reddit has built in an escape hatch of sorts. The company says users can switch between the two feeds, and the platform will return them to whichever feed they last viewed the next time they open the app. It's a small accommodation, but it signals that Reddit knows the "Following" tab will remain the default home for a chunk of its user base.

The tension here is familiar across the industry. Algorithmic feeds boost engagement and time spent, which platforms monetize; subscribers-driven feeds give users control and predictability, which loyal users tend to prize. Instagram, X and Facebook all walked the same path, and all eventually shipped toggles after user pushback. Reddit is following the same playbook, just later — and with a user base historically more resistant to change than most.

The new feed experience is rolling out globally over the next few weeks, the company says. How many users actually stay on "For You" — rather than switching back to "Following" and staying there — will be the number to watch.
