TPT Retirement Solutions has promoted Peter Smith to Chief Investment Officer of TPT Investment Management as the £11.4 billion pension provider expands its product range. Smith, an 18-year veteran of the organization, will also join the TPT Retirement Solutions Group Executive and report directly to Chief Executive Officer David Lane.
The appointment lands at a pivotal moment for TPT. The organization has cleared regulatory assessment for its defined benefit Superfund and is now working toward authorization to operate what it describes as the UK's first multi-employer collective defined contribution scheme. As the range of pension solutions widens, TPT wants to bind investment management more tightly to its broader business strategy — and it has put a long-serving insider in charge of that job.
Who is Peter Smith?
Smith joined TPT in October 2008. Over 18 years he helped build TPT's fiduciary management operations and shaped its current fund management model. More recently, he has held a central leadership role in developing the investment management capabilities that support TPT's wider pension propositions.
CEO David Lane framed the promotion as recognition of that record. Lane said: "Peter has played an integral role in developing TPT's investment capability over the past 18 years, and his appointment reflects the continued importance of investment management to our wider strategy."
Smith will not run the division alone. Chris Dickens, Nic Ashworth and James Robinson will continue providing executive coordination for TPT Investment Management alongside him.
Smith set out his own priorities in his first comments as CIO. He said: "Investment management is central to the success of our new offerings, and I am looking forward to working with colleagues across TPT to build on the progress we have made and help deliver strong, long-term outcomes for our clients."
What changed at the board?
TPT also announced a leadership transition above the executive layer. Mike Balfour completed his agreed term as Chair of TPT Investment Management in September 2026. Anna Troup will succeed him as independent Chair of TPTIM and will additionally become a Non-Executive Director of the TPT Retirement Solutions Board.
Nicholas Clapp will remain a member of the TPTIM Board, preserving continuity alongside the new chair.
The dual moves — a new CIO inside the business and a new independent chair above it — signal that TPT is restructuring both execution and governance at its investment arm at the same time.
How big is the platform Smith inherits?
TPT Retirement Solutions held approximately £11.4 billion in assets under management as of September 30, 2025, according to the organization. It serves more than 490,000 members and claims roughly 80 years of experience managing both defined benefit and defined contribution pension schemes.
That scale puts Smith in charge of investment strategy for one of the UK's substantial multi-employer pension platforms. It also gives TPT the balance sheet and membership base to push into newer structures such as superfunds and collective defined contribution schemes, where regulatory clearance rather than capital has often been the binding constraint.
What comes next?
The immediate test is authorization. If TPT secures approval for its multi-employer collective defined contribution scheme, Smith's investment team will carry direct responsibility for delivering returns under a structure the UK market has not yet seen at scale. Lane's stated priority — integrating investment management with the wider strategy — suggests the CIO role will grow in scope as each new offering clears regulation.
