One hundred entrepreneurs aged 55 and above completed India's first startup accelerator built specifically for their age group, WalkAbout announced at a Demo Day held October 31 at SPJIMR in Mumbai's Andheri West.
The 12-week programme, presented by WalkAbout — a community for active agers in India — ran in partnership with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research. It combined online business sessions, physical workshops, peer learning and one-on-one mentorship from WalkAbout Startup Advisors. Participants worked on product development, pricing, brand positioning and business planning, and each finished with a business plan intended to guide the next stage of their venture.
Finalist ventures spanned senior living, consumer products, apparel and accessories, education services, and arts and crafts. Founders pitched their progress and growth plans to a jury of industry professionals and entrepreneurs.
Who won Demo Day?
YoToyz, founded by Yogesh Kulkarni, 56, of Pune, took the top prize. Kulkarni brings more than 25 years of classroom experience to the venture, which builds fabric-based learning materials for young children.
YoToyz describes its product line as India's first fully fabric-based early years curriculum. The washable learning kits aim to encourage sensory engagement while offering an alternative to plastic toys and screen-based activities. Women artisans in Pune produce the kits, adding an employment dimension to the educational mission.
The jury cited YoToyz's business clarity, market understanding, creativity and social impact in selecting it. The prize package includes funding tied to specified business milestones, plus continued mentorship to implement its plans. WalkAbout did not disclose the funding amount or the individual milestones.
Who sat on the jury?
The Demo Day panel drew from business, entrepreneurship, publishing and academic innovation:
- Dr. Shweta Loonkar, Co-Founder and Director, KS Publication Pathway LLP
- Puneet Kapoor, Partner, SVP India, formerly with Kotak Mahindra Bank, Citibank and American Express
- Vivek Bhatnagar, Business Leader and Entrepreneur
- Aiswarya Simon, Associate, WISE Tech, SPJIMR
- Deval Delivala, Founder and CEO, WalkAbout
- Ashwini Kapila, Co-Founder and Chief Business Development Officer, WalkAbout
What does the programme signal about older founders?
Deval Delivala, Founder and CEO of WalkAbout, said the cohort showed how decades of professional experience translate into enterprise. "It was inspiring to see the WalkAbout Startup Accelerator cohort pitch their ventures, share the journeys behind their businesses and present their vision for growth," she said.
"Our members bring decades of skills, networks and resilience, and seeing them turn that experience into enterprise is a reminder that ambition has no age limit," Delivala added. She framed the programme's goal as broader than company formation — helping participants build income streams, personal purpose and confidence.
Manoj Mohan, Executive Director of WISE Tech at SPJIMR, argued that late-career founders carry real competitive assets. "Startup success stories often celebrate young entrepreneurs, but Colonel Sanders of KFC reminds us that some of the most remarkable entrepreneurial journeys can unfold later in life," he said. He pointed to sectors where experience compounds. "In sectors such as FinTech and B2B, decades of industry experience, deep customer understanding and professional networks can be powerful competitive advantages." WISE Tech backed the accelerator as part of that thesis.
What happens after Demo Day?
WalkAbout will keep the cohort connected. Entrepreneurs who didn't reach the finals or secure sponsorship stay eligible for the WalkAbout Entrepreneur Circle, which offers networking meetings, expert sessions and access to future accelerator cohorts.
For YoToyz, the next stage brings milestone-linked funding and mentorship. For the wider cohort, the Entrepreneur Circle provides a continuing platform to build on the business plans each participant produced — and a test of whether India's 55-plus founder pool becomes a durable pipeline rather than a one-off programme.
