What's News
- The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 chip starts at $1,999 and offers 24 hours of battery life.
- Apple says the M6 delivers up to 30% faster graphics and 13x the LLM prompt speed of an M1 MacBook Pro.
- The M6 iMac starts at $1,499 and offers up to 5x faster on-device AI than the M4 model.
- Preorders open October 28; both devices ship November 6.
Apple's new 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 and runs for 24 hours on a single charge, the company said Tuesday. The laptop runs Apple's latest M6 chip and ships in space black and silver.
Apple announced the machines one day before its "Pro and Tell" event scheduled for Wednesday. The rollout follows Monday's debut of a new iPad mini.
How fast is the M6 chip?
Apple says the M6 packs a 12-core CPU with the world's fastest CPU core, plus a 12-core GPU. Against the M5 chip, it delivers up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads.
The gains are larger against older hardware. Apple says the M6 reaches up to 13 times the LLM prompt-processing speed of an M1 MacBook Pro, and up to 1.3 times the performance of the M5 model.
The chip's memory setup also got a bump:
- 16GB of unified memory standard, configurable up to 32GB
- Memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s, up from 153GB/s on the M5
What ports and features does the MacBook Pro carry?
The port selection stays familiar. The machine includes HDMI, MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot, and a headphone jack. Like previous models, it carries a 12-megapixel camera.
Connectivity gets a generational jump. The new MacBook Pro supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Fast charging works with a compatible high-wattage USB-C power adapter. Apple says the laptop reaches 50% charge in 30 minutes.
What about the iMac?
Apple refreshed the iMac with the same M6 silicon. The desktop features a faster CPU and GPU, with Neural Accelerators built into every core. Apple says the M6 delivers smooth multitasking and strong performance for everyday apps, photo editing, and video production.
The AI story is the headline here. Apple says the new iMac delivers up to five times faster on-device AI performance than the M4 model.
The rest of the spec sheet:
- 24-inch 4.5K Retina display
- Advanced camera and audio system
- Up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports
- Color-matched accessories
- macOS 27
The iMac starts at $1,499 and comes in blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange, and silver — a seven-color lineup that keeps the consumer desktop distinct from the pro laptop's two-tone palette.
When can buyers get one?
Both machines open for preorder October 28 and reach stores November 6, according to Apple.
The timing matters. Apple stacked three hardware announcements into a single week — iPad mini on Monday, the M6 MacBook Pro and iMac on Tuesday, and the "Pro and Tell" event on Wednesday. That cadence puts the M6's AI-performance claims front and center ahead of the holiday quarter, where Apple will need the new silicon to justify a $1,999 entry price.
